Delegates Authorize Hunt For New ILC Office

Because this is an ongoing story, we will post all articles on this topic in "The Conference Office" series of stories:

The Illinois Conference is preparing to turn the page on nearly three decades in its current home.

Delegates at a Special Constituency Session on Sunday, March 29, voted overwhelmingly to authorize Conference administration to pursue a new office location within the Greater Chicagoland area. The action marks a potential fifth office move in the Conference’s 94-year history.

The approved resolution reads:

“To recommend to the constituency the approval of the relocation of the Illinois Conference office within the Greater Chicagoland Area, with details to be worked out by Conference administration and the Executive Committee. The proposed location must not increase operational costs.”

The current office in Willowbrook, purchased in 1998, once included a tenant whose lease helped offset costs and whose operations aligned well with Conference office life. After that tenant relocated in 2017, the building—approximately 30,000 square feet—became increasingly difficult to justify for a comparatively small staff.

“Previous administrations have explored relocation over the past decade, as the building we occupy exceeds our needs,” said Illinois Conference President John Grys. “A more appropriately sized space would allow us to steward resources more effectively and invest more directly in our mission.”

Delegates raised thoughtful questions about where a future office might be located. While no final site has been identified, leadership emphasized that this vote marks the beginning—not the conclusion—of the process.

Executive Secretary Michael Campos underscored both the weight and purpose of the decision: “Moving is not the easy option. Staying would be simpler. But we believe God is leading us to think carefully about how we can best support our members, churches, and schools.”

Conference administration will continue evaluating options and will provide updates as the process develops. The next regular constituency session will be held on October 24, 2027.
