Illinois Conference young adults recently gathered for a powerful, joy-filled weekend retreat at Camp Akita from October 31 to November 2. Nearly forty young adults came together to reconnect with God, build authentic community, and rediscover what it means to live as disciples of Jesus in today’s world.

The weekend’s guest speaker was Professor Rogelio Paquini from Andrews University, where he serves as a professor of Youth and Young Adult Ministry. With passion and practical insight, Professor Paquini led the group through a series of messages centered on the theme of discipleship—exploring what it truly means to follow Jesus wholeheartedly in a culture that often pressures believers to compromise.

Throughout the sessions, he challenged participants to reflect on how everyday choices reveal their identity in Christ and shape their spiritual journey. “Every decision either draws us closer to God or takes us farther away,” he reminded them, calling everyone to live with intentionality and faithfulness.

The Sabbath concluded with a deeply moving anointing service, where participants gathered in prayer, seeking God’s protection, guidance, and strength as they returned to their schools, workplaces, and communities. It was a sacred moment of renewal and commitment—a reminder that discipleship is not merely a belief, but a way of living as light in the world.

Of course, the weekend wasn’t all serious reflection. From creative evening games to Sunday morning rock climbing and outdoor adventures, laughter and connection filled the camp. The balance of spiritual depth, friendship, and fun made this retreat both meaningful and memorable.

As participants departed Camp Akita, their hearts were full—renewed in faith, inspired to live boldly for Christ, and grateful for a growing community of young adults who encourage one another on the journey of discipleship.
